EMS - Creating Commission Categories

Before we start with Commission Categories, just a heads up that there are three articles covering commissions in EMS. Together, they provide a complete guide to setting up commission structures from start to finish. They explain how to create Commission Categories (the different commission tiers or classifications), build Commission Profiles (the rules and calculation methods that determine how staff earn commission, including stepped and retroactive models), and create Commission Assignments, which link categories to profiles and apply them across appointments, packages, extras, and other revenue streams. Together, these processes enable businesses to automate commission calculations, maintain accurate financial reporting, and ensure staff are paid correctly based on their role and activities. • How to view existing commission categories.

  • How to successfully create and save a new commission category for future profile assignment.

When should I use this?

Use this guide when you need to establish a new tier or classification for tracking commissions within the platform. Creating distinct categories ensures your financial reporting remains accurate and allows you to easily apply specific commission structures to relevant profiles later in the setup process.

Before you start

  • Ensure you have administrative or financial management permissions to access the EMS Settings menu.

  • Decide on a clear, standardised naming convention for the new category to keep your financial records organised.

Step-by-step

1. Navigate to EMS Settings

Log in to your EMS dashboard. Move your cursor to the bottom left corner of the screen and click on Settings. This will open up the configuration management area.

2. Access Commission Categories

Locate the Financials section within the settings menu. Under this section, click on Commission Categories.

3. Initiate the New Category Creation

On this screen, you will see a comprehensive list of all currently created categories. To initiate a new one, click the Add New button located in the top right corner.

4. Enter the Category Name

Click directly into the Commission Category Name text box and type the relevant new category name. Ensure the spelling aligns with your internal reporting standards.

5. Save the New Category

Review the name you have entered. When you are happy with the details, click the Save button in the bottom right corner of the screen.

Important Notice: Once saved, the system will instantly create the category. It will then be immediately available to be assigned during your commission profile setup.

Best practice

  • Keep it Consistent: Use clear, descriptive names (e.g., "Standard OTAs 10%", "Corporate Partner Tier 1") so other team members instantly understand the category's purpose.

  • Review Existing Lists First: Always scan the existing table of categories on the main screen before hitting Add New to prevent accidental duplicates.
