Before we start with Commission Assignments, just a heads up that there are three articles covering commissions in EMS. Together, they provide a complete guide to setting up commission structures from start to finish. They explain how to create Commission Categories (the different commission tiers or classifications), build Commission Profiles (the rules and calculation methods that determine how staff earn commission, including stepped and retroactive models), and create Commission Assignments, which link categories to profiles and apply them across appointments, packages, extras, and other revenue streams. Together, these processes enable businesses to automate commission calculations, maintain accurate financial reporting, and ensure staff are paid correctly based on their role and activities. What you'll learn
How to assign a Commission Category to a Commission Profile.
How to update commission settings in bulk across item tabs.
How to fine-tune commission assignments for individual items
When should I use this?
Use this guide when you need to establish or update how commissions are calculated for staff across different revenue streams.
Key Logic: Commission Profiles define who gets paid (e.g., Senior Therapists), while Commission Categories define how much is paid for certain activities. Linking them ensures accurate automated financial reporting and payroll processing.
Before you start
Ensure your Commission Profiles and Commission Categories are already set up in EMS.
Verify you have administrative access to the Financial Settings menu.
Log into the EMS platform and navigate to Settings. From the main settings menu, locate the Financial section and select Commission Assignments.
Along the top of the Commission Assignments screen, you will see tabs for different item types: Appointment, Facility Appointment, Group Activities, Packages, and Extras. The system will default to the Appointment tab. Select the specific tab you wish to configure first.
Select your relevant location from the site drop-down menu. Then, choose the specific Commission Profile you are looking to configure from the profile drop-down list.
To assign commissions for other revenue streams (such as Group Activities or Packages), click on the corresponding tab at the top of the screen and repeat Steps 3 and 4.
If you only need to update the commission for a single specific treatment, package, or extra, use the built-in search function (which can be filtered by site) to locate the item. Click Edit next to that specific item, select your desired Commission Category for each Commission Profile, and save your changes.
Best practice
Work methodically: Always configure your assignments tab-by-tab to ensure no services are missed during bulk updates.
Double-check overrides: When using the individual edit function in Step 6, note that individual item assignments will override any bulk "Update All" rules applied to the wider tab.
