The visual and structural benefits of "Featuring" an extra.
Strategic criteria for selecting the most effective featured items.
How featured status impacts guest behaviour and sales conversion.
Use this guide when setting up or reviewing your "Add-ons" and "Upsells" for Rooms, Spa, or Dining. This strategy is essential for highlighting high-margin items that enhance the guest experience while increasing your average order value (AOV).
Key Logic:
In a standard list, extras are often presented as simple text links that require a guest to click for more information. By marking an item as Featured, you elevate it to a premium display position. Featured items are anchored to the top of the list and automatically display their image and description, removing "click friction" and making the item far more enticing.
Review your sales data to identify your most popular or highest-margin add-ons.
Ensure you have high-quality, professional imagery for the items you intend to feature.
Draft a concise, persuasive description for each featured extra.
Before selecting your items, consider how they appear to the guest:
Visual Prominence: Featured items show their Image and Description by default.
Positioning: They are always pinned to the top of the list, ensuring every guest sees them before scrolling.
Standard Items: Non-featured items are collapsed; a guest must actively click them to see images or details.
Choosing the right item is a balance of popularity and simplicity.
The "Quick Win" Rule: Choose simple, universally appealing items. A bottle of Prosecco, Chocolates, or Late Checkout are ideal because they require no explanation and have high emotional appeal.
Inventory Count: If you only offer a small selection of extras (e.g., 3 or 4), it is best practice to feature all of them. This makes your "Enhance Your Stay" page look rich and visually complete.
Strategic Pricing: Feature items that offer a clear "impulse buy" price point—items that feel like a justifiable treat rather than a major financial commitment.
Navigate to the Extras or Add-ons section within your specific module (Rooms or Spa).
Edit the item you have chosen as your "Hero" product.
Locate and tick the Featured checkbox.
Ensure the image and description fields are fully populated, as these will now be permanently visible.
Click Save.
The Prosecco Principle: Data shows that simple, celebratory items perform best in the featured slot. Avoid featuring complex extras that require long descriptions or specific time-slot management; keep the featured area focused on "instant gratification" items.
Mobile Optimization: Because featured items take up more vertical space on a screen (due to the image and text being expanded), be careful not to feature too many items at once. Featuring 1 to 3 items is the "sweet spot" for maintaining a clean, scannable experience for mobile users.
